Attended my 1st contest in July '89 with my wife and was hooked. "I can do this" was my mantra as my wife and I entered our 1st contest two weeks later. The rest is history as they say. We got started with a small team at the local Alki Beach contest, which quickly grew to big contests and paid professional sculptures. History of sculptures and events: '08 Sand box demo and carve for the Tacoma News Tribune '08 Cascade Challenge , Castle display, Harrison Hot Springs, BC, Canada '89 to '07 World Championship of Sand Sculpture in Harrison, BC, Canada Solo -1st place in '99, 2nd place in '00, 3rd place in '07 People's choice '07 Doubles - 3rd place in '01 Team - 1st place in '90, '92 & '01 as team captain or co-captain, and placed several other years '07 Parksville Beach Festival - won peoples choice and placed 4th in solo '89 to '07 Local beach contests at Cannon Beach, Oregon; Ocean Shores, Washington; Longbeach, Washington - placed 1st and placed many times in each contest with my team Hard Sand Café '97 to '07 Teaching sculpting classes to public for the Chamber of Commerce in Ocean Shores, Longbeach, Wa, and Cannon Beach, Or '07 Tournament of Champions, Harrison Hot Springs, BC, Canada - placed 2nd in peoples choice '06 & '07 Northwest Backroads special on Sand Sculpting in the NW '06 Joe Maize Memorial Sculpture, Harrison Hot Springs, BC, Canada - friend and mentor '06 Tri Cities Duck Races corporate sculpture '06 Sand in the City - Bellingham, set up, assist, judge, and carve demo '06 Parksville Beach Festival - won peoples choice and placed 3rd '05 Wedding castle for a private party wedding at Cannon Beach on the beach '05 Blankenberg, Belgium - carved with 45 sculptors to create sand sculpture park over 3 weeks '05 Horizon Airlines - cover story and feature or magazine '94 to '04 Sandscapes Sand Sculpture company - numerous sculptures for festivals fairs malls and corporate shows around the US '04 World's tallest sand Sculpture - Port Angeles, Wa '02 to '04 Christmas sculptures at Seaside, or for Chamber of Commerce festival '01 to '03 Television special done and run for 2 years in Tim Noah's program "How About That!" about unusual professions. '01 Seattle Children's Museum display sculpture '98 World's longest sand sculpture in LongBeach, Wa - 24 mi '97 Minnesota State Fair carved display for the Kodak Exhibit '96 & '97 University of Washington Experimental College - taught sand sculpture '94 Bill Nye the Science Guy - filmed special on sand sculpture for his structures program (#14) '91 to '94 Harrison Hot Springs Spring Team Competitions - won or placed in each '94 to '00 Sand in the City - assist in set up, assist, judge, and carve a demo '94 Santa Cruz, Ca - set up contest and assist sculptors in competition, and demo '94 4th of July sculpture for the parks department of Tacoma, Wa '93 Seatac Mall - lobby sculpture '89 & '90 Alki Beach contest with team It all began at the age of 6. I tried to "borrow" sand from the Atlantic City, NJ beach filling my Lincoln Log canister with sand. Then, promptly being disciplined and told "no sand box for this boy." Little did they know!..
